1@The upper part of a timber that is cut diagonally on each side in order to form a peak. In cross section the member is pentagonal. Shinogi are found on ridgepoles *munagi “–Ø, hip rafters *sumigi ‹÷–Ø, and on base rafters. One example was found on the south aisle, *hisashi ›ù, beyond the core *moya •ê‰®, of the Houryuuji lecture hall, Houryuuji Daikoudou –@—²Ž›‘åu“°, in Nara. This example was found in 1937 when the lecture hall was dismantled for repairs, and found to date from 990AD.

2@A decorative molding applied to the ends of bracket arms, *hijiki •I–Ø, rainbow beams, *kouryou “ø—À, and to the molded ends of nosing, *kibana –Ø•@, that extended beyond the surface of a corner pillar and the ends of wall plates, *daiwa ‘ä—Ö. This decorative molding became an important characteristic of the Zen style *zenshuuyou ‘T@—l. One example is the Tenneiji three-storied pagoda (originally five-storied pagoda), Tenneiji Sanjuu-no-tou “V”JŽ›ŽOd“ƒ, (1389) in Hiroshima prefecture.
