A pivot-hinged door. *To ŒΛ refers to sliding doors. However, in a compound word such as *karado “‚ŒΛ or *hirakido ŠJŒΛ, both of which are hinged, to is used. Pivot-hinged doors can be classified according to structural style: single panel; several planks joined together *itakarado ”Β“‚ŒΛ; or a paneled door set in a frame *sangarado ŽV“‚ŒΛ. Tobira can also be categorized by the way they open: single panel door swinging either inward or outward *katabiraki •ΠŠJ; doors that swing in both directions ryoubiraki —ΌŠJ. Folding doors are called moroori ryoubiraki ”ά—ΌŠJ, with each door having one fold, hence, two leaves. A door with two folds and three sections is called *mitsuori ryoubiraki ŽOά—ΌŠJ.
