Also called *wata-ita 綿板. Thin panels of wood inserted between the rails suihei-no-san 水平の桟, and stiles tategamachi 竪框, of a pivot-hinged door *sangarado 桟唐戸. From the late 16c, the wood panels were sometimes covered with elaborate carving; painting them also became popular.
