itadatami 板畳

1 The boards covered by tightly woven straw mats *tatami 畳, used to create the raised floor of an alcove *tokonoma 床の間. The boards are laid into a frame-work that is made within the floor area of the alcove. The thin straw mat is nailed as such a way as to completely cover the boards and the alcove frame. Itadatami is used especially in tea ceremony rooms *chashitsu 茶室 with an alcove that has a board floor level with the tatami. See *naka-ita 中板, *ko-ita 小板, *mukou-ita 向板.

2 A board placed in the part of a room which is not able to be covered by standard size tatami. See *itadoko 板床, *itajiki 板敷.
