usa torii　宇佐鳥居

A wooden, gate-like entrance *torii 鳥居, of the myoujin 明神 type at Usa Jinguu 宇佐神宮 in Ooita prefecture. It is unique because the curves at the ends of the top lintel *kasagi 笠木, and secondary lintel *shimaki 島木, are exaggerated. The top of the kasagi is covered with a cypress bark roof. Both the kasagi and the circular plates *daiwa 台輪, are painted black while the remaining members are vermillion. The strong abrupt upward curve of the tie beam *nuki 貫, is unusual. The ends thicken and are cut with a slant. There is no strut or framed panel between the tie beam and shimagi. The pillars have a strong inward incline and the base of the two pillars, made of stone and painted white, simulate a wrap *nemaki 根巻. Therefore, it is sometimes called a nemaki torii 根巻鳥居. The bases have no incline.
