yamamichi katou 山道火灯
KEY WORD : architecture / general terms

A window used especially in the Zen style *zenshuuyou 禅宗様; a type of ogival window *katoumado 火灯窓. It is generally characterized by S-curves on each side and an ogee-like peak at the top center. Yamanichi katou differs from a typical katoumado because it lacks a point at the top and its S-curves are cut from a board set into the window attached to the sides. The bottom sill is also inserted into the framing posts.
