Lit. sleeve.

1 A generic term meaning any structural element that is on the side of a main structure. This includes: the secondary pillars, sodebashira 袖柱, on a four-legged gate *shikyakumon 四脚門; stones arranged on either side of stone steps called sode-ishi 袖石; a small short fence sodebei 袖塀, on either side of a gate.

2 The part of a pan tile *sangawara 桟瓦, that is covered by the next tile.

3 The lower parts on either side of an ogre tile *onigawara 鬼瓦.
