uratsuchi　裏土

Backfill for a stone wall. Earth that is filled in between the large stones *hira-ishi 平石, and *sumi-ishi　隅石 of a stone wall *ishigaki 石垣. This earth filler is then covered with small stones known as *kuri-ishi 栗石. Sometimes small stones are also mixed into the uratsuchi.
