toriimon 鳥居門

Lit. bird perch gate. A shrine gate with a board fence attached to the outer part of each of the two pillars. A *torii 鳥居 is a simple gate-like structure with one or two lintels. It stands alone to mark the entrance to a shrine or shrine within a shrine. Normally, it has no gate doors or a board fences attached. An exception is the *Miwa torii 三輪鳥居 at Oomiwa Jinja 大神神社 in Nara.
