Hidden rafters. Rafters used to construct the roof framework of the main roof of a Japanese building. Hidden rafters have a steeper pitch than those used on the underside of the visible roof *keshou yane 化粧屋根. If a ceiling is installed, the rafters of the lower roof framework are obscured. However, the rafters of the lower roof framework are normally seen where they extend beyond the outer walls of building. The rafters are visible in the aisles surrounding the core area *moya 母屋 if no ceiling is added.
