Kochou　胡蝶

A pictorial subject based on "Butterflies" Kochou, Chapter 24 of GENJI MONOGATARI 源氏物語 (The Tale of Genji). The chapter centers around an elaborate spring banquet at the Rokujou 六条 mansion (see *Otome 乙女) which is often illustrated, and also Genji's continued pursuit of *Tamakazura 玉鬘. Paintings based on this chapter are characterized by dragon and phoenix boats on a garden pond and little girls dancing, dressed as butterflies, holding cherry blossoms and yellow Japanese roses yamabuki 山吹.
