A pictorial subject taken from "The Jeweled Chaplet" Tamakazura, Chapter 22 of GENJI MONOGATARI ŒΉŽ•¨Œκ (The Tale of Genji). This chapter centers around Tamakazura, an illegitimate child of Tou no Chuujou “ͺ’†«, Genji's friend and rival, and the Lady of the Evening Faces *Yuugao —[Šη. She has been raised by her wetnurse in Kyuushuu ‹γB and has turned into a beautiful young lady. A local warrior presses his affections on her and she and her wetnurse's family flee by sea towards the capital. Praying for better fortune at Hasedera ’·’JŽ›, Nara, they happen to meet Ukon ‰E‹ί, who had formerly served the Lady of the Evening Faces and is now in Genji's employ. Through her, Genji learns of the girl's whereabouts and he has her brought and installed at his Rokujou ˜Zπ mansion (see *Otome ‰³—). Scenes frequently selected for illustration include: Tamakazura travelling by boat; Genji interviewing Tamakazura in the house of the Lady of the Orange Blossoms (see *Hanachirusato ‰ΤŽU—’) on an evening of the Tenth month; and Genji and Murasaki no Ue Ž‡‚̏γ, his principal wife, surrounded by clothes boxes, deciding which robes to send to which of his ladies at the beginning of winter.
