gyakugatte 逆勝手

The reverse arrangement of the fire-box or hearth in a tea ceremony room, or when the guest's mat *kyakudatami 客畳, is to the left side of the host's mat *temaedatami 点前畳. Also called hidarigatte 左勝手. It is the reverse of *hongatte 本勝手 or migigatte 右勝手. Examples: Ihou'an 遺芳庵 in Koudaiji 高台寺 (17c), Kyoto; and Enju'an 延寿庵, Nara.
