Also fukurotodana 袋戸棚, or tenbukuro 天袋. Lit. enclosed shelf. 1　A small cupboard constructed at the top of the space beside a decorative alcove *tokonoma 床の間. It is attached to the pillars just under the uppermost non-penetrating horizontal beam, uchinori nageshi 内法長押. This space often contains staggered shelves *chigaidana 違い棚. Sometimes a small cupboard, usually called *jibukuro 地袋, is also placed on the floor of this space, although this lower cupboard is sometimes also known as fukurodana. These cupboards are used in rooms of *shoin 書院 style. The allotted space is usually wide enough for the cupboard to be closed by two sets of small sliding doors *fusuma 襖. Standard measurements are : bottom board 43.5 cm long, 39 cm wide and 1.8 cm thick; top board is 73 cm long, 38.7 cm wide and 1.5 cm thick. Overall height is 58.5 cm. 2　A portable shelf placed on the host's mat *temaedatami 点前畳, in a tea ceremony room *chashitsu 茶室, a chain room *kusari-no-ma 鎖の間, a large reception room hirazashiki 平座敷, or a small reception room *kozashiki 小座敷. The latter rooms form a part of an extensive residence.
