| Lit. pictures of Tartars hunting. A popular screen painting theme in the late 16c and early 17c. The pictures typically show a group of mounted horsemen wearing exotic central Asian costumes, hunting deer, boar, and other animals in a landscape setting. The hunters are usually shown encircling the fleeing animals--supposedly an actual practice of central Asian hunters. Because hunting is a warrior activity, it was sometimes combined with scenes of polo dakyuu Ε{, another continental male passtime. Notable examples include folding screens *byoubu by Kanou Soushuu λμ@G (1551-1601, Kumita gc col., Tokyo), his son Jinnojou rVε (fl. early 17c), and an anonymous Kanou artist (Asian Art Museum, San Francisco), as well as sliding screens *fusuma ¦ by Watanabe Ryoukei nΣΉc (d.1645). | ||||||
