The *zashiki ΐ•~ is a guest room; its name deriving from that of the mat originally provided for seating which in time developed into the covering of such rooms' floors with *tatami τ. Zashikikazari is the manner for arranging ornamental objects such as flower vases or tea ceremony utensils *chanoyu-no-dougu ’ƒ“’‚Μ“Ή‹ο, in this important space, for which there are special formulae developed in the Muromachi period .
Objects would be placed in the alcove *tokonoma °‚ΜŠΤ, on the obi-itadoko ‘є° platform, on shelves *tana ’I, or in the decorative study space tsukeshoin •t‘‰@. There were also rules for the placement of objects in meeting rooms *kaisho ‰οŠ, and reception rooms in traditional residences *shoin-zukuri ‘‰@‘’. A special household officer was responsible for these arrangements.
