1@A curved handle-like piece attached to the broad concave parts of a pantile *sangawara ŽVŠ¢ to prevent snow from piling up on a tile roof *kawarayane Š¢‰®ª. They are usually arranged in a staggered pattern about one meter from the edge of the eaves. However, the placement may vary. The purpose is to allow a gradual sliding off of the snow so that should it fall on a pent roof *hisashi ›ù below, damage would be minimal.
2@On roofs covered with different types of wood shingles either round or square planks are laid parallel to the ridge to prevent the sudden sliding of large amounts of snow onto lower roofs below or to the ground. There are also examples of raised fascia boards *hanakakushi-ita •@‰B” to help prevent sliding.
