Lit. round stone. A boulder about 15-30cm across, which has been naturally rounded by a river or ocean waves. Often andesite, anzangan ˆΐŽRŠβ, or granite, kakougan ‰Τ›ΌŠβ. Tama-ishi are used as paving stones *shiki-ishi •~Ξ in gardens (see *tama-ishijiki ‹ΚΞ•~, *nobedan ‰„’i), for stone beaches ishihama Ξ•l, as base stones *soseki ‘bΞ supporting walls or pillars, in stone walls, tsumi-ishi ΟΞ, in front of a garden wash basin, suimon …–ε, and as kerb stones fuchi-ishi ‰Ξ. Although ocean stones are rounder than river stones, the salt content of ocean stones prevents moss from growing on them.
