sasudai 扠首台
KEY WORD : architecture / general terms

The horizontal base on which the diagonal braces (*sasuzao 扠首竿) are placed in the gable of a gabled roof (*kirizuma-zukuri 切妻造) on the gable of a hip and gable roof (*irimoya-zukuri 入母屋). The base member may also be an ordinary transverse beam (*hari 梁) or rainbow beam (*kouryou 虹梁). When a strut (*sasuzuka 扠首束) is centered between the diagonal braces, it, too, usually rests on the sasudai.
