sotogaki 外垣

Lit. outer fence. A generic name for any fence that encloses a tea ceremony house and garden *roji 露地, or one that surrounds an outer garden *sotoroji 外露地. The sotogaki is slightly higher than the fence surrounding the inner garden nakaroji 中露地. The sotogaki may be a hedge, a closed bamboo or plank fence, or even an open fence, but is usually higher and more solid than the interior fence of a tea garden.
