KEY WORD :@architecture / roofing tiles
@
A peak tile. A semi-cylindrical, elongated, barrel-shaped, hanging tile which covers the broad, concave, eave-end tiles, *ogami karakusagawara ”q“‚‘Š¢, positioned on either side of the gable peak. The pendant, *gatou Š¢“–, attached to the peak tile is the same size as other semi-cylindrical hanging tiles, but in order to make it fit over the slight gap at the rear between the two ogami karakusagawara, the diameter of the back end of the peak tile must be widened. Because the ogami karakusagawara slope forwards somewhat, the peak tile, ogamidomoe, tends toward the horizontal, and must also be inclined forward a little. Thus looking up from below, the two types of tiles will appear to have the same thickness. The arrangement is good because it prevents leaking. This method of arranging the ogamidomoe and the ogami karakusagawara developed gradually. Exactly when it was first used is unclear. However, it was probably not employed before the 13c-14c.
