oomon 大門

Also read *daimon. Lit. large gate. A large gate that functions as the entrance to a nobleman's mansion or a castles. Usually 5 x 2 bays, there are generally two streys, a hip and gable roof *irimoya-zukuri 入母屋造, bracket complexes *kumimono 組物, and a high railing surrounding the upper story. Statues of *Niou 仁王 are placed at the front on either side of the gate openings. On statue has his mouth closed and the other has his mouth opened.
