oogao-e 大顔絵

Lit. large (or full) face pictures. A type of *ukiyo-e 浮世絵, or full-color print *nishiki-e 錦絵 that features a close-up of the head of a *kabuki 歌舞伎 actor or a beautiful woman, such that the face boldly fills most of the space resulting in the cropping of details of the hair-style or shoulders. A type of *ookubi-e 大首絵. Said to have originated with the master of actor prints *yakusha-e 役者絵, Katsukawa Shunkou 勝川春好 (1743-1812) in the late 1780's. The type is noted for arresting and memorable designs.
