Also written 塗り屋, 塗家.

1 A fireproof building in which all the timber surfaces of the structural members were entirely covered externally by mud daub *tsuchikabe 土壁 and plaster, shikkuikabe 漆喰壁. The fireproofing system was called *ookabe-zukuri 大壁造, or *nuriya-zukuri 塗屋造.

2 The term is occasionally applied to buildings constructed using the *dozou-zukuri 土蔵造 method of construction.

3 An alternative term for *nuriya tenjou 塗屋天井 used in northern Shikoku 四国.
