narukodo 鳴子戸

A gate used between the outer and inner gardens *roji 露地 leading to a tea house *chashitsu 茶室. It has fairly stout posts, sometimes with bark remaining, inserted directly into the ground *hottatebashira 掘立柱. The gate, itself, is made of nine pieces of slender bamboo attached at uneven heights to a clapper-shaped board. This is held by stiles made of bamboo madake 真竹, joined to the posts.
