mukaiheijuumon 向い塀重門
KEY WORD : architecture / gates

A gate that has two supporting posts, sodebashira 袖柱, in front of and behind the main pillars to carry the undulating gables *karahafu 唐破風, that stretch across the front and back of the gate at the eave end *nokisaki 軒先. A regular *heijuumon 塀重門 does not have these support posts. The gate roof is covered with cypress bark *hiwadabuki 桧皮葺, and a clay lion's head, shishigashira 獅子頭, is sometimes placed on the ridge. Like the heijuumon, it has no horizontal beam *kabuki 冠木.
