A pictorial subject taken from "The Rose Plum" Koubai (red plum blossoms), Chapter 43 of GENJI MONOGATARI ŒΉŽ•¨Œκ (The Tale of Genji). Koubai is a younger brother of the late *Kashiwagi ”–Ψ and the husband of *Makibashira ^–Ψ’Œ, the widow of Prince Hotaru, Hyoubukyou no ‚liya •Ί•”‹¨‹{ by whom she had one daughter. "The Rose Plum" chapter centers around Prince Niou's (see *Niou no Miya “υ‹{) interest in this princess. The most frequently depicted scene shows Koubai's young son at the royal palace, waiting with a branch of red plum blossoms and a letter from his father to present to Niou.
