A trowel chisel. A type of paring chisel *tsukinomi “Ėčw, with the cutting blade bent in the shape of a trowel. Like the *marunomi ŠŪčw, the cutting-tip is ridged, and has a small blade-angle. Both edges are very thin. The blade-width ranges from 6mm to 18mm. The kotenomi is used for gouging out the base of dovetail grooves which cannot be shaved with a housing plane, shakuriganna Œˆēī, and for carving the bottom of mortises. See *aritsugi ‹aŒp.
