marunomi 丸鑿
KEY WORD : architecture / tools

A type of striking chisel *tatakinomi 叩鑿, with a thin, arc-shaped blade, one side of which is ridged. The angle of the cutting tip is narrower than most striking chisels. The marunomi is used to help insert a log in its natural shape into a mortise socket. After the rough carving has been done to make the hole, the marunomi is used to shave the mortise according to the curve of the log so that it will fit exactly. The marunomi is also used to carve wooden moldings.
