jinuri 地塗り

A base coat. The process of preparing ancient painting surfaces by completely covering the materials used, such as paper, wood, hides or wall panels, with a base coat of white *hakudo 白土. Other colors such as red *tan 丹 or verdigris *rokushou 緑青 were also used as base coats. Similar in meaning to *shitanuri 下塗り.
