jiguchi-e 地口絵
KEY WORD : art history / paintings
 
A picture based on a word pun, popular around the mid-18c. Most were drawn by town painters *machi-eshi 町絵師, but some were also produced by *ukiyo-e 浮世絵 artists. Many such pictures were painted on paper lanterns *andon-e 行燈絵 and strung along both sides of a roadway for festivals. Because of their practical function, few are extant today.
