Also read itaoshi. Battens used to prevent boards from moving. They are long, thin strips of wood set vertically and nailed into horizontally set boards. Itaosae also refers to the battens used in board and batten ceilings *saobuchi tenjou 竿縁天井 and is also applied to the topmost ridge of a Shinto gate *torii 鳥居, which has a protective rain cover over the top lintel *kasagi 笠木. This cover is pressed down and can resemble the form of a panel strip *me-ita 目板. Example: Itsukushima Jinja *Ryoubu Torii 厳島神社両部鳥居 (19c) Hiroshima prefecture.
