heiden 幣殿
KEY WORD : architecture / shrines

A shrine building, usually located on the same axis as the worship hall *haiden 拝殿 and sanctuary *honden 本殿, in between these two buildings. In the heiden, offerings, heihaku 幣帛, paper or silk cuttings or red and white cloth are presented to the god(s) kami 神. It is also occasionally used as a place to recite prayers and can serve as a higher ranked seat for worshipping at a shrine. The heiden may be a separate building, or structure joined to the haiden, or it may form a passageway *ai-no-ma 相間, between the haiden and honden. The size of heiden also varies considerably and there are exceptions regarding its location. For example, the Heiden of Naikuu 内宮 at Ise Jinguu 伊勢神宮 was located beyond the outermost of the four fences surrounding the sacred precinct.
