goubuchi 格縁

The wooden ribs or coffers laid in a criss-cross pattern to form a coffered ceiling *goutenjou 格天井 or coffered and latticed ceiling *kogumi goutenjou 小組格天井. These ribs may have a similar shape, in cross-section, to the battens *saobuchi 竿縁, used in a board and batten ceiling *saobuchi tenjou 竿縁天井. The ribs are about 6cm to 7.5cm wide. The space between them is 45cm - 90cm. The coffers are usually chamfered on their lower edges making an ornamental edge *fukurin 覆輪.
