Fuji no uraba 藤裏葉
KEY WORD : art history / paintings

A pictorial subject taken from the "Wisteria Leaves" (Fuji no uraba, lit. underleaves of wisteria), Chapter 33 of GENJI MONOGATARI 源氏物語 (The Tale of Genji). In this chapter Tou no Chuujou 頭中将 has resigned himself to the love between *Yuugiri 夕霧 (Genji's son), and his daughter, Kumoi no kari 雲井雁. The open rivalry with his old friend Genji has abated. Tou no Chuujou invites Yuugiri to a banquet under the wisteria blooming in his mansion garden to signal his acceptance, at long last, of Yuugiri's marriage proposal. The banquet scene under beautiful wisteria hanging from a tall pine in the garden is most often illustrated. Other illustrations include Emperor Reizei 冷泉 and retired Emperor Suzaku 朱雀 visiting Genji at Rokujou 六条 while servants are on the lake fishing.
