A pictorial subject taken from the "Evening Mist" Yuugiri, Chapter 39 of GENJI MONOGARARI ŒΉŽ•¨Œκ (The Tale of Genji). Yuugiri is the son of Genji and his first wife *Aoi ˆ¨, and the husband of Kumoi no kari ‰_ˆδŠε (see *Fuji no uraba “‘— —t): this chapter concerns Yuugiri's increasing infatuation with and eventual seduction of the Second Princess, Ochiba no Miya —Ž—t‹{, the widow of *Kashiwagi ”–Ψ. Jealous, his wife Kumoi no kari retreats back to her father's house. The two episodes frequently chosen for illustration are: the jealous Kumoi no kari coming upon Yuugiri from behind to snatch away a letter she thinks is from the Second Princess; and Yuugiri visiting the princess at her Ono villa, Ono sansou ¬–μŽR‘‘, standing at the veranda railing and looking at the fall landscape with fan raised to his eyes. The first episode is illustrated in a section of the earliest extant version (early 12c) in the Gotou Œά“‡ Museum.
