Also called chounahatsuri ηαΟ. A decorative pattern carved into the visible surface of a timber using an adze *chouna ηα or a paring chisel *tsukimomi “Λθw. Only these tools are used and a mallet may not be used to strike the paring chisel. The three most common designs are wave patterns namigata ”gŒ`, bamboo nodes takefushigata ’|ίŒ` and chisel marks tsukinomigata “ΛθwŒ`. These patterns are cut into *tokobashira °’Œ, the posts of alcoves *tokonoma, °‚ΜŠΤ visible rafters *keshou daruki ‰»Ο‚–Ψ, the wooden frame of a latticed window, and board and batten ceilings *saobuchi tenjou ž¨‰“Vˆδ. Because chestnut wood kuri-no-ki ŒI‚Μ–Ψ is often used to receive such patterns, the term *chounaguri ηαŒI is also used.
