bachizuka 撥束
KEY WORD : architecture / general terms

A strut shaped like a shamisen 三味線 plectrum. A variation of the common bearing block *masu 斗, capped type of strut *kentozuka 間斗束, used from the 7c through the 12c halfway between two bracket complexes *tokyou 斗きょう, to add support to the beams above. By the 13c, the strut *tsuka 束, had broadened at the base to create a plectrum-like shape, bachigata 撥形. The bachizuka gradually came to function less as a supportive member than as a decorative one.
