zenshitsu　禅室

Sometimes an alternative *zendou 禅堂. 1　A room for Zen 禅 meditation and the teaching of the tenets of Buddhism. At Gangouji Gokurakubou 元興寺極楽坊 (Kamakura period) in Nara, the Zenshitsu was originally the living quarters of the head priest. Later it was converted to a lecture hall and used for meditation. 2　The chief priest's room. 3　A title for a head priest, or an honorific for a priest of noble birth. See *soudou 僧堂.
