uchigumori 打曇

Also written 内曇. Also called kumogami 雲紙. Abbreviation of uchigumorigami 打曇紙. A type of decorated paper, usually *ganpishi 雁皮紙, with cloud kumo 雲 shapes in the upper and lower borders of each sheet. In the Heian period the clouds were blue, but in the Kamakura period purple was also used, often with blue in the upper border and purple in the lower. Uchigumori is used to make poem cards *tanzaku 短冊 (tall rectangular) and *shikishi 色紙 (square). After a of disaster or personal misfortune, the paper is reversed, with the purple clouds on top and the blue underneath.
