Also read tachi. A small castle shiro 城 and/or a wealthy provincial residence yashiki 屋敷. The residence of a powerful regional family typically furnished with defensive installations such as an earthen embankment *doi 土居 and a moat *hori 堀. Accordingly, the term may also refer to a small scale castle or fortification where the lord resides on a daily basis *kyojou 居城.
