soukei　双髻

KEY WORD :　art history / sculptures

A hairstyle where the hair is divided into two bunches, and tied on top of the head. The hairstyle is found on Buddhist images such as *bosatsu 菩薩 and *ten 天; most numerous in the Asuka period. A representative example is the Miroku bosatsuzou 弥勒菩薩像 in Chuuguuji 中宮寺, Nara.
