shumisenshiki iwagumi　須弥山式石組

Lit. Mt. Sumeru type stone arrangement. A grouping of stones which expresses Mt. Sumeru *Shumisen 須弥山 and the nine mountains and eight oceans *kusen hakkai-ishi 九山八海石. Shuminsenshiki iwagumi usually consists of a large standing stones surrounded by several smaller stones. They are usually placed above a waterfall or on central islands, nakajima 中島, and artificial hills *tsukiyama 築山 in gardens.
