Also, although rarely, pronounced shoubyouga. Painting on large surfaces of architectural structures. The term combines the two words *shouhekiga 障壁画 (paintings on sliding doors, free-standing screens) and *byoubu-e 屏風絵 (paintings on folding screens). Paintings on large architectural surfaces gained popularity in the 15-16c and flourished during the 16-17c. Many examples dating after 16c remain.
