shakuzue 尺杖

A rod-like, rectangular piece of wood made of Japanese cedar sugi 杉, or Japanese cypress hinoki 桧, 1.8 to - 3.6m long, 3cm wide and 30.3cm thick. It is marked in gradations of shaku 尺(30.3cm) and is used for making measurements. It is also used to measure out for the height of a ceiling or lintel *kamoi 鴨居. The shakuzue is usually made by a carpenter at the construction site. Also called kanzao 間竿.
