nuriya tenjou 塗屋天井

A ceiling of the *sunoko 簀子 type made from bamboo stalks lashed together, and overlaid with several cm of mud daub or clay to act as a firebreak. Found in the farmhouses of northern Shikoku 四国, especially in Kagawa prefecture. Also in Gunma, Niigata, Fukui, Osaka, Nara and Shimane prefectures. Sometimes limited to the area of ceiling immediately above an open hearth *ro 炉 or *irori 囲炉裏.
