makurabyoubu　枕屏風

A low folding screen about 50cm high, and usually with two panels *nikyoku byoubu 二曲屏風, although sometimes with four panels *yonkyoku byoubu 四曲屏風. So called because it was placed near the pillow, makura 枕 when bedding was laid out. The screen served as a rack for clothes and accompanying accessories, as well as a kind of headboard to provide a measure of privacy and protection from drafts.
