mume 無目
KEY WORD : architecture / general terms

Lit. smooth or flat. A prefix used to indicate that a threshold or sill *shikii 敷居, or a lintel *kamoi 鴨居, has no grooves, channels or tracks. The former is called *mume shikii 無目敷居 and the latter is called mume gamoi 無目鴨居 (a blind lintel). It is thought that the word mume is derived from nume 滑, a coin with one side smooth.
