mokuga 木画

Wood picture. Also called mokue 木絵. A technique of wood decoration, called hirazougan 平象嵌 (flat inlay, see *zougan 象嵌) in ancient times, and similar to mokuzougan 木象嵌 (wood inlay) using ivory, horn or bamboo. There are several types of mokuga, mokuji 木地 (wood grain); kika kouseimon 幾何構成文 (geometrically constructed) using *ichimatsu 市松 (checkered patterns), yabanemon 矢羽根文 (arrow feather pattern) or yahazumon 矢筈文 (herringbone pattern); and kaiga 絵画 (pictorial) for representing birds and flowers.
