kinin-ishi 貴人石

Lit. noble's stone. A type of trump stone *yaku-ishi 役石, used to mark the seat of the main guest at the waiting bench *koshikake machiai 腰掛待合, in an outer tea garden *sotoroji 外露地. The stone is low and flat for resting the feet, and indicates the spot on the bench where the main guest should sit. There are smaller adjacent stones, called jikyakuseki 次客石, which mark the places of other visitors.
